Hydrogen Purification

Molecular sieves are used for drying gases and liquids and for separating molecules on the basis of their sizes and shapes. When two molecules are equally small and can enter the pores, separation is based on the polarity (charge separation) of the molecule, the more polar molecule being preferentially adsorbed.

Hydrogen Purification

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) has proved to be an effective and economic way for hydrogen recovery. Nowadays, our capacity of PSA system is with multi-bed ranges from a few hundred Nm3/h to large scale plants with more than 400,000 Nm3/h. The hydrogen purity can reach up to 99.9999%.

Binderless 5A  and activated carbon are key adsorbents to remove feed gas impurities such as CO, N2 and CH4. There are four main groups of users for a hydrogen purification system:

1. Steam Reforming (Hydrogen Plants)
2. Catalytic Reforming Net Gas
3. Hydrocracker and Hydrotreater Purge Gases
4. Hydrocracker Flash Gas

Step 1:H2 diffuses into the channel of zeolite and contact with Ag ion (physical adsorption)

Step 2:H2 is catalyzed by Ag ion to form H2O. H2O is further adsorbed by zeolite(chemical adsorption)

Location of Ag in the zeolite

Macroscopically, Ag ions are located in the cages of FAU

Microscopically, Ag ions bond with framework oxygen to form ionic bonds

Ag ion reacts with H2 to produce Ag0 and H+. H+ bonds with framework O to form hydroxyl

Ag ion is reduced by H2 to form Ag0

Ag0 aggregates with Ag ion to form positively charged clusters

Ag clusters further react and consume more H2

The more dispersed Ag exists in the form of Ag+, the more H2 is exposed to it, with higher utilization efficiency of Ag and better hydrogen adsorption performance.
